Dr Stephen Steigrad

A pioneer in fertility treatment, Dr Stephen Steigrad established a donor insemination clinic at the Royal Hospital for Women 35 years ago, and was also instrumental in establishing the Fertility Society of Australia.

With over four decades of practice behind him, his clinical expertise is unquestionable, and he often handles complex procedures. Dr Steigrad's special interests include donor gametes, the treatment of infertility in disabled couples, the preservation of fertility in patients about to undergo chemotherapy or radiotherapy for malignant disease and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis.

Dr Steigrad earned his degree at the University of Sydney in 1964 before undertaking obstetrics and gynaecological training at the Royal Hospital for Women. He was awarded the Hallett prize of the Royal College of Surgeons of England during his post-graduate studies and also gained the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Dr Steigrad then lectured at the University of NSW and became Deputy General Medical Superintendent at the Royal Hospital for Women, a position he held for 15 years before becoming Director of the Department of Reproductive Medicine. ...read more
