My mother and I often visited the Drum Hotel to have lunch, then a quiet drink then play the pokies and have wasted thousands as we are very unlucky people. The staff at the Drum Hotel are absolutely hopeless and down right rude. There is a young girl with a pony tail at the venue who talks about customers every time you go to the cashier and another staff member who wears glasses who carries a book like doing some thing important and does nothing. I will never set foot in that venue again as the service and the talking behind customers backs are unacceptable and need a good talking to by Management. News travels fast and I hope who ever reads this never attends that dump
I'm not sure how I managed to locate this hotel but somehow I did and decided to taking the tram a little further north than where I would normally get off just so I could check this place out (and have since discovered another three pubs further north from here that I am going to have to explore one Saturday). Basically put, other than the fact that it is located around the corner from the old Pentridge prison, there is nothing really all that fantastic about this place. There is a small smoking cage (because it is not really a beer garden) next to the pokies room, and another front bar area, and as far as I could tell, no real happy hour either (and I worked that out because I visited this place at a time one would expect there to be a happy hour).
Had lunch there today. Veal schnitzel with mash and salad. Overall very good. The schnitzel was well cooked and thicker than usual, the mash was nice and creamy and the salad had some nice mushrooms and red onion, and best of all was dressed with a little olive oil. Most places are too stingy to do this. I have lived in Coburg for 7 years and have eaten in most Coburg eateries, but have avoided Drums as it looks a bit ordinary from the outside. The inside in much better. Shame about the pokies though!
I think there's a theme here. See my recent review of Browns Corner Hotel in Coburg. Accordingto the signs the proprietors are different but based on the renovations at Drums I'd say Drums & Browns at the very least share the same interior designers. Drums has a pokies out the back. It used to have a decent sized TAB in the front, so for Melbourne Cups (the 1 day I have a punt) this was my go to venue. After their reno's they now have a small TAB machine. THe reno's do look good. The staff are good. The bottle shop is well stocked, has decent specials & is open long hours. Overall, this is a place I'd be happy to drop in on for a reason but not a place I'd plan to go...
