I suspect I've been here a couple of times in the past, though it has been one of those pubs that I have always known about (namely because I would pass it every so often when I lived in the area). So, one afternoon I grabbed some friends and came up here for a drink. Well, I have to admit that I was impressed, if only for the craft beers. I wouldn't go as far as calling it a classy pub, but it does have that feeling of a country pub in rural England. I guess that is what gives this place its charm. Oh, and the surrounds really add to the character as well.
I have been a regular at the duck inn for many years. Have noticed a high staff turn over recently. Arrived Thurday 730pm for dinner. Restaraunt had approximately 6 people, obviously not busy. Upon ordering a scotch fillet ($35) was informed that to have steak with chips and salad, instead of kipfler potatoe and veges would cost "a little extra" (extra being $6.50). Wife ordered Caesar salad, and a burger for our 4 year old. Waited for 30 mins for steak to arrive, only to find it cold, and horribly rare. Returned it to kitchen where they said they would re make meal. Waited another 25 mins for meal only to find it was almost as rare as the first. Extremely poor service, terrible kitchen staff, and staff.
Booked three weeks ago for Valentines Day for 6 pm, so hardly prime time dining. Arrived to an empty restaurant and was seated at a table hard against the band. When I asked to be moved, we were grudgingly sent to a table wedged between a doorway and the bar. Every other table was free at this time. So long Duck Inn, just lost a regular customer.
The Duck Inn is well worth a visit when passing through the Adelaide Hills. Stumble across this pub awhile ago, the staff and locals are friendly with great atmosphere. The food is excellent quality for pub/bistro dinning. The weekday lunch specials (half Price) on regular menu are great value for money. My wife had the salt and pepper squid (cooked perfectly) and I order the Beef Guinness Pie (hearty and full of flavor), 1/2 Price during lunch Monday to Friday. Open Fire place in the main bar and has the feel of an English bar in winter. Well worth a visit!
