We spent the weekend in Byron Bay and hired a car through Earth Car Rentals. Obviously the new Owners have pulled out all the stops to provide a very professional service and to dispel any bad reviews previously written before they took control.
I would not hesitate to hire through Earth Car Rentals in the future.

Please be smart enough not to use these guys. The car we hired had a burst tyre. Fine, it happens, but they didn't have any tools (including the key to pop the hub cap off) to change it! So after suggesting we walk to a farm and ask for a screwdriver and a tyre iron (we were on a country rd 45 mins from Byron) - ignoring the fact there were no farms in sight - they then took almost 2 hours to get to us. They said they wouldn't charge us for the day but a week later it hit our account. I called up and he said that he changed his mind and did want to charge us, and I should be happy because he could have charged me for the call out and the tyre repair. Seems like a nice guy, but if you look at these reviews, it's clear he's pretty good at ripping people off.

you will be happy to know that Earth Car Rentals are now under new management. The new owners are so professional and friendly it is like a completely new business.
Please make sure you check them out next time you come to Byron...i think you will be pleasantly surprised!
When we returned the vehicle, we checked it together with the management and agreed everything was in order. We signed a paper. And then a few days later they charged 47 $ on my credit card claiming that a hubcap was damaged. Despite all our protests, they refused to believe that we had nothing to do with this problem. One week later, they charged my credit card AGAIN claiming they had discovered that the spare tire in the trunk was damaged.
I NEVER TOUCH THE SPARE TIRE, I COULD NOT EVEN SAY IF THERE WAS A SPARE TIRE IN THAT CAR ! They insisted and managed to charge another 50 dollars from my account (because I had signed a $ 300 preauthorisation).
Though I can appreciate a Hire company taking a $500 deposit for car rental. What I cannot appreciate is the fact they then charged me AGAIN upon return of the car, and did not just take it out of the deposit. Then they did not return my Deposit to me card until I begged them a week later! A bit tough on the battling BackPacker :(
