El Burro

A small venue which quickly became crowded, but service was at all times rather well managed. The food was good but nothing spectacular. Certainly their hottest of hot was nothing like I had hoped for and the meals were good but not worth boasting about. Coffee was average, the wines - like far too many venues - over priced for cheap quality stuff, and the overall cost what I expected but more than the quality deserved.

Im quite articulate when it comes to Spanish cuisine and where to dine, given my extensive experience living in Spain for some period and having a real exposure to the food and its true quality. We were here a few nights ago and ummed and arwed about whether to give these guys a shot. Had a looked at the menu which didnt look too bad, in the end we opted in and chose a number of taps from calamares, Mijillones, abondigas, croquettes basically it was a mix of fried squid, meat balls, mussels, fried meat & mushroom mixed with four deep fried. I need to give them some credit, they were quite good, not what you would exactly expect to get in Spain but the done a good variation and presentation was great. Service was pleasant, all in all I would like to return and perhaps try some of their main dishes.

Back again & this time to try more different tapas. Last time we had a paella as our main and a few tapas to share but this time was all about the tapas. Between 2 people we ordered at least 6 different tapas. My favourite was the corn and calamari. The fried chicken was slightly overdone. The food came out all at the same time which made it good to enjoy to be able to dig in different plates at the one time which gives it a great variety. Fresh and tasty. Staff was very nice and checked up on us during the course to make sure if everything was ok. We were so full by the end of it. Every tapas was worth trying. To finish it off was refreshing beers which went down really well. Enjoyable night once again.

Before making my reservation for El Burro, I was a little hesitant to make a booking as my brother in-law is Spanish and I kept thinking to myself, I could always ask him to cook me up a traditional Spanish dish. Instead, I thought why not try it and compare what's out there to what I already know. So we made our way to Nelson place in Williamstown. We had a relatively early booking for 6pm so when we entered on time, we were their first customers for the night. It felt odd as there wasn't anyone else around other than the staff. Our waiter seated us with a very welcoming tone and explained the menu. The restaurant was well decorated and on one wall had a huge chalkboard which had a copy of their menu.
