Slow service. Got our order wrong. Eggs were all served in round spheres not actual poached eggs as detailed in menu. Really expensive for what we got. Better value in cafes on the lower north shore where you expect to be taken for a ride with your dollar. Lady running the place was mentally absent at times. Have been there once before but under other management. Much better then.
Mates had raved about the Elephant Boy Cafe so while we were in the area we decided to give it a go. But similar to its British Empire decor, the slow, sad demise of the Elephant Boy's empire has been a product of its own success. We wanted to try its boasted 'fair trade manually roasted organic coffee' and arrived to a buzzing cafe during brunch time. The management, who also served us, handed us the lunch menus and when we asked for coffee and cake instead they were less than impressed. I was less than impressed with their lack of amenities (one shared toilet for over 100 patrons; no high-chairs or change facilities), the burnt coffee and their store-bought cakes. My homemade gluten-free chocolate is so much more luscious, especially when served with TLC and a good dollop of cream and my own roasted blend so much more flavoursome. If you want to check out the Elephant Boy, go for it, but don't expect the world!
"The British Empire Re Visited"
Centrally located on main St of delightful Bowral, Southern Highlands NSW. This is truly a step back in time, to British India.
On arrival I was greeted and made to feel welcome, and found a very nice place to be comfortable seated.
The visiting card reads; best coffee, breakfast, pancakes, soup curries, fishcakes, casseroles, pies, burgers, tarts, sandwiches, wraps, cakes. Well we could not choose all. But what we did choose was well presented and very tasty. Which I am sure includes the rest of the menu. The atmosphere was so relaxing we did not want to leave. A booking would be advisable, as this Cafe is extremely well known and
recommended. By travelers between Sydney & Canberra. What a delight to find this Cafe. Have journalized for a return visit.
A secret enclave on Bong Bong- You'll be inspired to write a book... or a poem... or maybe a song- when you step into this uniqely quirky cafe. With books stacked against each wall- forming a colourful montage you will find yourself lingering here over coffee, cake and a sandwich. As it's namesake you will also find little elephant figurines everywhere. The cake varieties will get you into a mental-headspin with rhubarb tarts, tiramisu, passionfruit sponges and plenty more. On the elephant inpsired menu there are also a decent variety of drink choices- a popular choice was the Mango Lassi.
Would recommend you stop by this cultural hub anytime you are in Bowral.
