Went here for a bachelorette party and it was a great place for this. There's indoor and outdoor seating and space for big groups. Cool set up, quite trendy and gives off a hipster vibe. The staff are confident, friendly and fun. We were seated at big tables and got plates to share. We began with manchego and chilli popcorn (quite oily but a nice flavour), and quesadillas with tomato salsa, chorizo, red onion, garlic and cheese.
We got a pea and quinoa salad that was gluten free with semi dried tomatoes, Persian fetta, roquette and a basil vinegrette. We then had Caribbean Jerk Chicken, sitting on top of sweet potato purée with a bean sprout and herb salad. The flavours were lovely and a huge dish. We also got the vegetarian enchilada: sweet potato, pumpkin, spinach and fetta wrapped in a soft corn tortilla. With sauce and sour cream. The Elk and Pea experience is contradictory in so many ways. Though do not mistake this as a criticism. Much to the contrary in fact; it is its success. The sense and talk of tapas has infiltrated the Australian community so rapidly, with tapas bars and cafes encroaching on everyday restaurants. The notion of tapas is overtaking the dated concept of an ala carte meal; we seek, and thrive on, experience. And Elk and Pea is none short of this.
As far as presumptions go, I only knew of one view: If you feel like meat, go to Elk and Pea. You are greeted casually by a blue-shirted Aussie bloke who clearly pays a lot for his haircut but keeps his demeanour on the low-key; it’s obvious Elk and Pea match their staff to their thesis. Once seated you are handed a small ...read more
Lovely little Mexican-inspired restaurant in Braddon. The menu is thoroughly "Central American" with Mexican street-food options like tacos, burritos, a host of finger food, and various large sharing options like goat, pork and fish. We visited twice, once for dinner and once for lunch. On both occasions, the staff were attentive, friendly and helpful, and were happy to discuss the menu options at length despite busy sittings both times. For dinner, we tried various finger foods like the zucchini flowers and tostadas, which were quite small, but delicious. We then moved on to tacos, which were also quite small, and lacked some flavour/kick - we were expecting a nice blast of jalapeo, but were met with much more subdued and subtle flavours (again, nevertheless delicious). We also tried a couple of the desserts, which were nice, but quite overpriced -- you can easily spend $30 for a couple of nicer desserts elsewhere in Braddon or Civic, so take a walk into town ...read more
