Tourist Attractions
Federation Square
, Cnr Flinders & Swanston St
Melbourne, VIC, 3000
The meeting place of Melbourne. Right across from Flinders St Station, there is a great tourist info center here to get you oriented to the city, help you out with suggestions, get you on a free walking tour, or get you set up with a Myki card. Staff there is knowledgeable and friendly.
Fed Square is actually pretty cool, especially on the weekends. Every so often (actually fairly often) you can turn up here to find some sort of festival going on, some major sporting event on the big screen, or even a band playing on the stage. Actually, if you want to watch the Grand Final, or the tennis, you can be assured that there will be crowd here watching along with you. Along with a number of cafes, and a couple of bars, there is a museum called The Australian Centre for the Moving Image, which is basically a small museum about everything film, video, and television related. You can also find the Ian Potter Gallery here, which is the NGV gallery dedicated to Australian art. However, my favourite aspect of this place is the book market that you find in the Atrium on Saturdays – there is always a large number of booksellers gathered here selling all sorts of books – there is always a bargain to be found, and some really good books among the offerings as well.
This is one of the iconic landmarks of Melbourne. It is located across the road from Flinders Street train station and is usually used as a gathering place to watch or celebrate major events. When there is an event there the atmosphere is awesome. It is definitely a must visit destination if you are new to Melbourne
