The Fortune of War is one of the many pubs in the area who claim to be Sydneys Oldest pub. They have certainly maintained the integrity of the original pub and pays homage to its vibrant history through the interior and memorabilia. It is a nice place to visit but nothing overly special, just another old pub in the Rocks.
This pub is one of the pubs that seem to be fighting for the title of 'The Oldest Pub in Sydney' (apparently there are two others in The Rocks, and one in Parramatta). One of the staff told me that they claim the title because they have always been in this location while the Lord Nelson has moved around a couple of times. As a pub it is really isn't all that much (though I do note that they have live music I even remember stepping in here years ago just to watch a band). Sure, it may be one of the oldest pubs in Sydney, but it doesn't have all that much beyond that, having only standard beers on tap. Even then I seem to always land up in this place, not just because of its age, but also because it has a heaps cool name. This is basically one of those pubs that you visit just to say that you have been here.
