This organisation delivers assistance of a kind that allows people to help themselves. This is the most important kind of charity. Restoration of some form of sight allows people to then choose to become more independent and possibly work to support themselves or contribute more to their community both locally and internationally.
I first met Fred in 1970. He was my opthamologist from that time until his untimely death. I have Fred to thank for my eyesight - I have had two corneal transplants. He was a larrikan but a true humanitarian when it came to people's vision, particularly the less fortunate.
I have been supporting the Fred Hollows Foundation since 2002. I support them because they are a true Australian charity who are continuing the work of the late Fred Hollows in Australia's Indigenous communities as well as over 20 countries abroad (South Africa, Kenya, Nepal, Vietnam, etc.). They are also the winner of the "Best Practice Not-For-Profit Organization" award at the Australian Charity Awards because their numbers reflected that the money they raise actually goes towards helping the people that need it. As an Australian, I will continue to support The Fred Hollows Foundation, as should all Australians.
