General Gordon Hotel
Pride of Sydenham,The Pride of Sydenham
Situated directly opposite the Sydenham train station the General Gordon has been an integral part of the local community for over 80 years.
Steeped in history, the Hotel was named after General Sir Charles George Gordon (1833 ? 1885).Winner of many awards and medals, the General was involved in military campaigns in Crimea, Sevastopol, China and the Sudan where he was made governor general. Although British by birth he had many characteristics we now associate with being an Australian!
The General was fearless and lead his troops from the front. So much so that he met an untimely death at the siege of Khartoum where, after evacuating 2,500 British civilians, he was beheaded by local rebels just two days before a relief force arrived. When news of his death was received there was an "unprecedented wave of public grief across Britain".
Today the General Gordon has been restored to its former glory and our newly renovated beer garden is now open for you to drop by and enjoy a drink. Our bistro offers a delicious seasonal menu and is a great spot for you and your friends to enjoy lunch or dinner.
We hope to see you at the General Gordon ...read more
