George Iv Inn

George Harper of 'Abbotsford' built the George IV inn in 1839. The sweeping veranda’s, courtyard and sprawling sandstone structures are typical of this period. A boutique brewery has been established on the premises known as Scharer's little Brewery, with beer brewed in the traditional German method.

No longer makes its own beer, and I believe it recently changed hands. Food in the recent past has been dreadful, accommodation disgusting & beer cloudy, so it can only improve. Let's hope this happens, as it really is a wonderful "unimproved" early Australian building (no horrible plastic modifications) which deserves some sympathetic improvements which could make it a winner again (as it was a few years ago).

Bad accommodation; wouldn't recommend it. To get to the showers and toilets, you have to walk across the pub courtyard from your room (awkward!!!). Seems like a nice enough pub to eat and drink at, but I wouldn't stay overnight here again - even at $60 for a twin room, this was overpriced. The room was dirty, the floor looked like it hadn't been vacuumed in months; there were holes in the flyscreen on the window letting the mozzies in, the air was really stuffy and no fan provided, and the walls were paper-thin so we had to listen to loud, drunken people carrying on all night while we tried to sleep. The showers had plenty of hot water but toilet facilities were dirty and looked liked they hadn't seen a toilet brush in months. Ick.

Great pub. Good beer, decent food, nice atmosphere.

Nice historic pub - yes. Bloody great beer brewed in house - yes. Traditional pub atmosphere - yes. Food quality - just ok, but that was at least 6 months ago, may have changed since. A popular place for tourists. Has gone away from the traditional pub feel with the intro of pokies and a pool table. I guess the best thing about the place is their own beer - which alone keeps me coming back.
