Culinary whiz Teage Ezard strikes again at Gingerboy, with a focus on South East Asian hawker-style street food. Whether you stop by for lunch, a pre-theatre bite or dinner with friends, the menu never fails to impress – nor does the twinkly star inspired interior complete with transparent Philippe Starck Louis Ghost chairs. Gingerboy’s menu revolves around Thai, Malaysian and Chinese flavours with a distinct Ezard touch. For the full effect, order several dishes from the snacks menu before moving onto the larger shared ones. The son-in-law eggs ($13.50 for 3) are widely lauded, and with good reason. If this hadn't been recommended to me I would never have noticed this street or found this restaurant. The staff were brilliant from the moment we walked in. We were on our way to the airport but they didn't blink an eye at our suitcase and just wheeled it into a corner behind the bar. My request for a cocktail not on the menu was no issue. We were stretching lunch out prior to the flight home and told the staff this and again - no issue. Of the dumplings available the standouts were definitely the lamb and cabbage dumplings - juicy and so much flavour. Again, requests for an extra dumpling per serve or one less were no issue. The son-in-law egg was a hit. The ocean trout tataki was delicious. Just because you don't see it on many menus we splurged on the waygu strip loin which was perfectly cooked and tasted so good.
We were drawn to the neon red sign in a lane way so gave it a try. They serve modern Asian hawker style street food. We orders their salt and pepper spare ribs which was perfect for sharing and is also what their dishes are based on. It was a great experience with great customer service.
This place is a Melbourne classic and is right up there in terms of fine contemporary Asian (Malaysian hawker) dining. Had a wonderful dining experience here tonight. The waiters were attentive but not intrusive and the Austrian Reisling that was recommended was delicious. The son-in-law eggs were excellent and so was the king fish and oysters. We got a dessert platter to share and was impressed with each item.
