Grub Food Van
A 1965 Airstream van sitting in front of a converted industrial building, Grub Food Van looks like an oversized grub in aluminium casing. We pay homage to the local food chain with our menu featuring grown produce from the greenhouse on our site as well as a selection of the finest local ingredients.
Grub Food Van will remind you of the old days while embracing the new. You may consider us eclectic but we prefer the term, pluralist!
All I can say is that this place is just sooo Fitzroy. Okay, don't let the name fool you it's more than just a food van, but the van sits out the front quite clearly, and you can order drinks from it. However it is a full blown restaurant with some really cool things, such as this awesome table tennis table (not that I actually play table tennis) and this impressive collection of snow domes. Mind you if you just go to the van and sit outside you end up missing most of the awesome stuff. Sure, the portions were small, and it is basically a gastro restaurant (I had the rabbit they do offer some interesting dishes) the atmosphere of the place certainly makes it one of those places so simply sit down and enjoy. Oh, I also liked the camo nets over the outdoor area.
Had brunch here with a friend this weekend and I'm sooooooooo in love with this charming little nugget of a cafe! It's hidden down a side-street, which is always a bonus in Fitzroy... the menu is modern and healthy (I had a roast vegetable salad that was to die for), the chai is superb, the staff are so lovely, service is smart and there are delectable little cakes in the cabinet that I'm going back for one day soon. Outside is a courtyard with a ping-pong table and the huge windows mean you feel a part of the action even inside on a chilly day, it's like a micro-holiday to begin your day. Do it. #reviewtowin
