We were living and working in Central Australia and contracted Hallwood Builders to construct our architect-designed home in Zuccoli. We spent a lot of time determining what we wanted and we made our initial payment - before work commenced - in April 2016. The builder had askd for a 10% initial payment and we made the payment, not realising that it was illegal to seek an advance greater than 5%. We were conned about the finances but the builder was paid, and a little work was done. We did not visit the site until late June and we were disappointed to see how little work had been completed.
We were assured that the job was progressing and it was 'on track' for the scheduled completion date of late September. What we did not know was that the builder had ceased to be registered as a builder in the NT. This had occurred when he did not re-register by August ...read more
As a Territorian dealing with renovations and building over many years I have seen many businesses come and go, my recommenations on tradespeople are Hallwood Builders, Paul Jolly for timber flooring and Top End Bathroom Specialists. All extremely helpful and service resulting in good design and a professional finish.
We built our first home with Hallwood Builders and what a beautiful home it is. We knew he was a smaller custom builder and he advised us that the build would take longer and it was completed on time. Building can be stressful but there has to be a bit of give and take sometimes. If you make changes during the build, then expect any builder to add in costs for variations, thats how they work. We constantly had people knocking on our door wanting to know who the builder was and if they could look through our home. The finishes were beautiful, the home won 2 HIA awards and qualified for a national prize for "innovative use of steel". When we sold the home we received a record price for a 3 bedroom home in the area (higher than homes twice the size were receiving)) I attribute this to the quality of finishes and the tropical design that Hallwood delivers. We would build with Hallwood Builders again anytime.
Terrible communication skills, does NOT finish work. Shocking finishes - still multiple defects which have not been fixed. Do not expect timely services - Contract still not completed 12 months after due date.
Hi RoseyMay your experience reflects ours to a tea. Not only is it a battle to get defects rectified but this builder likes to randomly write variations and invoices with no regard for the contract except if it is in his favour. For anyone considering getting them to build you a house, save yourself the heartache and expense. It simply is not worth it. The smiles and salesmanship will evaporate once you sign the contract and he will then treat you as his adversary to be conned duped and treated with contempt. I haven't seen him complete a build in less than 10 months- but he'll promise 6 months or less. If you don't take my word for it- ask him to introduce you to 5 happy previous customers, he won't be able to find 1. His houses look good from the outside but are full of design flaws. This is a builder to be avoided- you can't do any worse than him. Spend the money with someone professional and competent.
