Without doubt the best value meal in Hawthorn, but yes people are queing out the door to get in so be early or prepared to wait a while - otherwise you can always take out. They have small dining rooms on the second floor if you want to get a group together. Remeber you'll be there for a good time not a long time, they feed you and get you out quickly but you'll leave satisfied and will not have burnt a hole in your pocket.
You wonder how they aren't making a loss at this place, with the price you pay versus serving sizes. For $6, you can get a lunch set menu that includes the main meal of the day (like chicken teriyake with rice) and a bowl of soup. $6!!! The chicken is well marinated but in the last year or two, they've started piling a whole lot of sauce and gravy on every dish and it is sometimes a bit much.
Another favourite of mine is the omurice - tomato and vegetable rice wrapped in an omelette.
The nasu dengaku is yum, and the green tea ice cream is a refreshing yet creamy end to a delicious meal.
A long standing authentic Japanese Restuarant that offers fast, cheap meals! The set lunch and dinners are great in value! The hot food is always the way to go and there's a large range of entrees to choose from as well! Also, the green tea milkshakes are a MUST try!
So popular that people queue up to get in. The Samurai is a smallish but very affordable eatery with a good menu and a selection of
lunch and dinner box specials. Where else can you get a four course meal for around $15? Meals are tasty and well presented. Sadly
though, the waiting staff are so busy that on the past two occasions that I've dined there, I've been neglected and had to chase staff
up to see where my next course is.
Don't expect a lot of hospitality either. They'll clear your table and have someone else sitting at it before you've made it to the cash register.
I think the problem is that they are also a take away and everything is just a big rush. Still, the meals are cheap and this is why it remains a top Hawthorn venue.
