Hellenic Museum
The Hellenic Museum aims to be the nation's foremost centre of Hellenic history, culture and the arts. It is a place where the public can explore the legacy of the Greek immigrant experience in Australia and examine the influence of Hellenic culture and people, from antiquity to the present.
Wonder at the artefacts and cultural traditions of ancient and contemporary Greece, many dating back to 5th century BC, in this educational museum.
When I was making my way from work to Southern Cross station to catch the bus to the airport I suddenly spied this place, and what looked like an exhibition of Ancient Greek Art. My interest was suddenly aroused so I immediately jumped on the internet to discover that it is a long term exhibition. This is the old Melbourne Mint that has since been taken over by the Hellenic Museum (which is not surprising considering Melbourne was once known to have the largest Greek population outside of Athens). I'm not sure how long the exhibition is going to be there but I first thought it was just Ancient Greek art, however the collection stretches from pre-history right down to the Greek revolution of the 19th century, and even has some modern clothes. While not as expansive as some I have seen (such as the Archeological Museum in Athens), it does have a decent collection and is well worth a visit if you like Ancient artifacts.
