Hells Kitchen

Hell’s Kitchen may remind you of raging kitchens and touches of New York, but Hell’s Kitchen is in fact a small bar restaurant hidden away in Melbourne’s laneways that draws in an interestingly “hot” crowd. It is a very popular place to meet up with friends and catch up over a few drinks.

Peering down over one of Melbourne’s most bustling (and graffitied) laneways, Hell’s Kitchen is a slice of heaven for those seeking a bona fide “downtown” bar. With a vintage vibe, sassy staff and way-cool tune spinnage, it’s no surprise that this arty alcove has been favourably compared to a New York dive in a good way. Known as much for its vantage point as its house-infused vodkas, Hell’s has been a local favourite for

The perfect place to pop in for a quiet drink. Cosy atmosphere. Not noisy. Windows overlook the laneway below. Love it.

Cosy, intimate, well trained staff who know their stuff, friendly. Upstairs I couldn't find it at first. Not to noisy. Will return

Okay, I don't go to this bar all that much, which is a bit of a shame because it isn't all that bad. Basically it is an upstairs bar hidden down one of Melbourne's many laneways, and it can be fairly easy to miss. It actually has a really cool inner-city vibe to it, and it is also pretty grungy (and quite dark as well). It isn't a huge establishment, but they do have a number of beers on tap, as well as a huge selection of other spirits (and bottled beers). There is also a small lounge area, as well as a number of seats that look out the window onto the alley way below. Mind you, it can get pretty crowded at times, but it certainly has a really nice ambience about the place. In fact I probably should make the effort to come here more often than I do because it certainly is one of those places that I really like (even if it is a bit dark).

A trendy, cosy upstairs bar where visitors may enjoy drinks, coffee or food in warm, dimly-lit surroundings. The decor strikes a fine contrast to some of the citys bleakness, and open windows keep the atmosphere less-than-suffocating. On the down side, there is no balcony; smokers must perch on ''the drums'' in the hall or the laneway outside - beer waiting to be manhandled up the stairs. Also, despite being a bar, it appears that Hells is in fact too trendy to serve chips of either kind. But still, the staff are friendly, and I will be back when I next need a classy location for coffee.
