As a casual Japanese food experience in the stunning setting of Walsh Bay, Hicksons Izakaya is right up there with the best we've tried in Sydney. The quality of the food alone is top notch and rivals that of meals we've had in Tokyo. The owner Omar was super friendly and the chef is clearly a master at what he does. We had the sashimi, bento, pork, and scallops and all were premium quality. A big nod goes to the scallops that I think may have been the best I've ever had. Hicksons Izakaya is packed at 5.30pm. The tiny forty-seater is rammed with well-dressed theatre types, speaking with modulated tones and rounded vowels. A steady stream of joggers and hipsters in sockless shoes parade past our table, which takes in Walsh Bay and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, depending upon which direction your chair happens to be facing.
To ensure everyone has the best view, the lower part of this little glass box, thoughtfully tempered with draped canvas to limit your exposure to the sun, is dominated by a long banquette facing the sea. Hickson Izakaya is situated in the perfect location for a relaxing evening, right on the water in Walsh Bay, surrounded by boats and some beautiful piers.
The area, once an industrial wharf area, but these days a cultural hub with multiple theatres and this restaurant would be perfect to dine at before a show. Though they also have lunch specials, in particular bento boxes if you’re out of the office for your meal. This Izakaya restaurant has classic and modern styling, with a number of tables and bar seating that are harbour facing. The kitchen is open, allowing you to watch Chef Hiro and his staff in action.
