I live in the area and have enjoyed many beers/wines and meals at this pub. I met the owner (I think) once and she told me about the history of the place as some of the fireplace tiles match the ones in my house. Ive always taken friends and family visiting as it a cool venue. I dont frequent the pub but Ive probably been there 10 times in the last year. Unfortunately my last experience was horrendous. The first and last time I will ever stay overnight at this hotel. Check in was fine and the staff member was polite and showed me to my room, so far so good. I felt it was a little overpriced, but hey, I was willing to pay and that is not my gripe. I put my credit card over the bar and had a meal and couple of drinks, went to bed. I was told there would be any one working in the morning so I would have to pick up my card the next day on my way home, which seemed reasonable. We booked an overnight package deal with these guys. The accommodation was pretty good. The room very spacious. The deal allowed us to select any dishes of our choice to make up the three course menu. The food was delicious, we felt like stuffed pigs afterwards! The beer is fantastic. Breakfast the next morning was simple, but ample and did the job. We'll definitely be back for another over-nighter at some point in the future.
Beer is great. Food is horrible. Hardly no vegetarian options and you can forget about vegan. Tried to ask the waiter if I could order the breshetta without the cheese to be told "They don't like to alter the menu" I asked "how hard can it be to leave the cheese off" - lucky for them I am NOT lactose intolerant, but simply don't like cheese, and opted to scrape off the cheese leaving half of it on the bread. Go to other restaurants in the area - much nicer food.
Tried to give this place another shot. I wish I could write something positive about it other than the beer. Most of the staff are arrogant and rude. The food is horrible. Don't order anything other than some chips or a Parma, otherwise you will be disappointed. Their beer prices change depending on who serves you, and a pot of their own esb beer costs more at the brewery than a pub 50 mins down the road.. Go figure.
Walk up the street and go to Zarbys or the Vic, at least there are decent people running those establishments.
