This wasn't a bad pub, though I have been to a lot better. That doesn't mean that it was bad, or didn't have any character, it did, but it wasn't one of those places that would draw me back any time soon (unless of course I was in the area). They have live music, and one interesting quirk I discovered was that there was a one way window in the guy's toilets that looked out onto the stage, which I thought was really cool because it meant that you could watch the bands while washing your hands. It is also connected to a backpacker's hostel so expect to see a lot of backpackers down here, especially at night. They have some tables out on the road, but nothing in the way of a beer garden. As I said, not a bad pub, but not one that I would go out of my way to visit.
Do not book a Function here! The Management of Hotel Barkly in St Kilda is extremely unprofessional. They cancelled our function (5 weeks before the date!!) in the upstairs room based on the fact that their Function coordinators (of which I have spoken to 3 different staff as they cannot seem to retain staff) did not update "their" function books so they informed me that I had not corresponded with anybody since booking the function which was booked and deposit paid with email correspondence. I had phoned them many times as did not hear from anybody their end and confirmed details and booked accommodation (nearly all of their rooms!). They insinuated I did not talk to anybody which is always nice to be told. It came out though that this is was an excuse and the real reason is they were opening the function room to the public, handled very poorly and very unprofessionally. Nice that they tried to put the blame on me.
