We had a lovely evening here and thoroughly enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. It was great to order small servings and share them to taste new things. The outdoor seating and the superior yakitori make this a great spot to enjoy some Japanese food in a very relaxed atmosphere.
Take good intentions and execute them poorly What do you get?
ICHI NI !!! You know when you walk into a restaurant and you feel immediately welcomed, Ichi Ni isnt one of them.
To its credit Ichi Ni serves quality and fresh food, unfortunately the service is poor; from the seating (with attitude) upon entering to getting orders wrong and challenging you whether youve ordered the item or not to serving Gin and Tonic with questionable Gin content. These things can happen sometimes. Those who have worked in the industry know you cant be 100% all of the time. But what you do when you get it wrong shows your professionalism. Ichi Ni has the intentions but lacks the quality to be one of the better restaurants in St Kilda instead it is just another average restaurant you will not want to return to.
Japanese Tapas. How very now. This is fashionable food for the fashionable masses distributed from a fashionable location on the St Kilda esplanade. Its difficult to go into any detail for Ichi Ni as simplicity is one of its key approaches. A simple menu, a simple offering, done simply well! Food is tasty, arrives quickly & isnt too small. Well my expectations were low. Im often left hungry after Japanese. Combine that with the Australian take on Tapas, loose translation being small plates of overpriced nibblies & I was expecting to leave with both my stomach & my pockets somewhat empty. Luckily Ichi Ni left me feeling basically satisfied, both gastronomically & fiscally.
