Il Solito Posto
European sophistication, a charming basement location, relaxed atmosphere and great Italian food make for a memorable dining experience. The restaurant is divided into two dining areas, the informal bistro area at the front or the more formal 'stay a while' area towards the back. The bistro has a blackboard menu offering good pastas, soups, and salads with the dining area offering an á là carte menu with the likes of steak, fish, and veal dishes. Great cake and dessert selection and the coffee is excellent too.

I've had this place on my 'to-eat' list for a while now and finally got around to it, and sadly the build up wasn't worth the wait. The service, restaurant and ambiance was really good, but the food however was a bit disappointing. I had the ragu pasta which wasn't anything special. I wouldn't recommend this place considering the price, I could get better Italian else where.
Upon my arrival to Melbourne with friends then checking in our accommodation, it was time to find some lunch! A friend was told of a place on Collin Street that we should try so off we went to find it! Now we know why it was highly recommended and we were glad we came. I ordered the ragu and that was so tasty! The pasta was well-made and the sauce was perfecto! All the other dishes that came out I also tried and they too were delicious. The staff were very friendly and chatty, our lunch outting lasted a good 2.5 hours here I reckon, we were so relaxed and comfy. I definitely would recommend this place also and I know I will be coming back again on my next visit - especially after I heard they do a pretty darn good Espresso Martini! ;)
Tucked away in the basement you could so easily miss this traditional Italian eaterie filled with office workers in suits at lunchtime. The menu is small but there are always specials as well which broadens your choice, although not much for vegetarians (which is shame as there is some fabulous vegetarian food from Italy!) Although it is located in the more upmarket end of Collins Street, some dishes are surprisingly good value such as the chicken salad which was under $20. The pasta dishes are delicious and cooked to perfection. Save some room for the desserts as they do a mean tiramisu!
