Izakaya Den
Enjoy Japanese 'pub style' dining at this superb, hidden away city gemIzakaya Den's basement space is packed most nights with diners sharing Japanese tapas plates and sampling imported Japanese beers, sake, umeshu and shochu. Owned by Simon Denton, of Verge fame, along with Miyuki Nakahara and Takashi Omi, the decor is stark but comfortable with exposed beams, marble tables and projected specials on the main wall providing bursts of colour. Informal, relaxed and buzzing - this Izakaya has quickly become a favourite haunt of Melbourne's dining elite.
This hidden space beneath Russell St has been molded into an edgy ‘Izakaya’ – a Japanese-style pub serving small plates. Unravel the drinks list – a paper scroll tied with string – and choose from an extensive list of sake and Japanese beers, tempting cocktails or great wines. This is one of my favourite modern Japanese restaurants. On Fridays they do a $22 lunch special and they also have a $33 menu called the Izakaya classics which features its infamous corn fritters with wasabi salt. The serving size was very generous especailly for the pork belly. This time we came around, the service was on the slow side however this could be due to the lunch rush.
I am almost certain that this is the best Japanese restaurant I have ever experienced in Australia.
Hidden in the basement area of a city building, this dimly lit Japanese bar has about 50 seats. It opens at 5:30 and you can sit at the bar and watch the highly skilled chefs prepare your food with such care and precision.
Every dish was amazing but my favourite was the kingfish, the fried chicken and the seafood clam chowder which was a sweet broth of subtle and well balanced flavours.
It is a little pricey but the quality of the food is exceptional. It cost is about $140 for two of us.
