Every time I visited Melbourne I always went past Kanpai and on the back of my mind I always thought that it is more of an up-scale Japanese teppanyaki restaurant, with the dark atmosphere and all. But when a friend of mine took me here last month I realised that it's not as fancy as I thought.
At the inside, the place is a little intimate and also a little warm, and the settings and decor is a little outdated.
The main food offerings are their teppanyaki, with selection of different meats to go with their special salted butter sauce. The sauce delicious but since it was very rich it could get too much real soon. Otherwise, the meat or vegetables by themselves would probably be nothing than just grilled things.
The staff that served us was a little on edge that day, although she was very attentive and prompt throughout our visit.
It is very rushed and a kind of in and out experience. You do need to get there early on any night to get a nice table that is not near a door or in the way. The staff don't really talk much and this can be nice if you don't want to be hassled. The alcohol is priced very well, as so is the food. It can get pricy if you over order and this tends to happen as every looks and sounds yummy.
