Katnook Estate Winery
Katnook Estate lies in the heart of Coonawarra, Australia's premier red wine district.Katnook Estate is located on the Riddoch Highway, just north of Penola, in the heart of Coonawarra. Katnook is an aboriginal word meaning "Fat Land" referring to Coonawarra's red, fertile soil known today as "terra rossa".
Katnook was the site of Coonawarra's second vintage made by John Riddoch in 1896. In the 1980, the second chapter of Katnook Estate began when wines were again produced from the property by Senior Winemaker Wayne Stehbens...who still makes Katnook Estate wines today.
Wayne Stehbens boasts an extraordinary track record, having won two Jimmy Watson Trophies (1987 and 1998) and a double trophy at the prestigious International Wine & Spirit Competition in 2003 for Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon 1998. Further trophies include the 2000 Odyssey winning both the International Wine & Spirit Competition 2005 and Decanter Wine Awards 2005.
In the Langton's Classification V, Odyssey receives a rating of Outstanding and the Katnook Estate Cabernet Sauvignon a rating of Distinguished. Prodigy Shiraz joined the Classification in the Excellent section in 2010. Katnook is now one of just six Australian wineries with three or more wines in this prestigious list.

This winery is right in the heart of Coonawarra, their first vintage was way back in 1980 and they have become a true champion of the region, winning two Jimmy Watson Trophies. Cabernet Sauvignon is their hallmark and if visiting the Cellar Door make sure you check out the Cellar Door only single vineyard wines and Caledonian Cabernet Shiraz. A must for any Limestone Coast visit, the Cellar Door staff are very welcoming and knowledgable and all wines red and white are impressive.
