Kenji
The masterly technique and vivid imagination of Kenji Ito continue to provide a compelling blend of the traditional and modern at this little gem in the city's southeast corner. There is sparkling fresh sushi and sashimi, of course, and cracking tempura, making this one of the very best places to experience these Japanese staples. But that same obsession with finding the best ingredients shows up in less conventional dishes that might introduce elements such as quandongs, mozzarella or maple syrup. While the chef's exuberance might occasionally get the better of him, there are so many thrills it's easy to forgive the odd spill. That goodwill is helped by the cheery staff and relaxed ambience that is a world away from the more formal Japanese approach.

The food was modern Japanese with a mix of the old, however, the service was very poor for the type of set-up, especially the price they charged.
I didn't get the service like others though I was there before the table next to me. Maybe it was market more for the Australian. My bill alone came close to $90.00. I am not complaining about the cost, just dissatisfied that they ignore me the whole time.
On top of that they gave me the account when i still have half a glass of wine and half of the dinning room was still full. it was just after 9.
I am not in a hurry to go back there or recommend it to others.
Run by owner/chef Kenji and his lovely wife Norika (spelling? sorry) Kenji modern Japanese is, as the name suggests, a fusion between traditional Japanese and modern cuisine. The ingredients are always of the highest quality and Kenji strikes a wonderful balance between the styles. The seafood is particularly good with the finest Tuna available being served, along high quality Waygu beef, and local lamb, all prepared in modern sauces and preparations with their roots still firmly in Japan. Wonderful sushi, sashimi and tempura are available for those wishing to stick to a more traditonal menu, but be sure to broaden at the the finish and leave room for dessert particularly the wonderful souffles. Excellent wine list of local and NZ wines. Highly recommended.
