A really lovely, homey little find in the Yarra Valley. A large, rustic, sun-drenched deck overlooking rolling vineyards. Helped that it was a stunning sunny day when we were there, but I think it would be striking all year round. Home style Italian cooking - the pizzas and lasagna were terrific. And I was particularly fond of their Pinot Grigio. (Not quite as crazy about the Sav Blanc, but it was still nice and a very good value.) This is a great stop on any off-the-main-trail Yarra Valley wander - or a congenial place to head for on its own and settle in at for a long, leisurely, wine-soaked afternoon. Great place to come with a large group. Enjoyed a lovely family style lunch out on the deck. For $25 p/person you receive an antipasto platter, lovely homemade lasagna, and a great selection of wood fired pizzas (prosciutto, mushroom & pumpkin were all very tasty) to share. Really good value & no chance of leaving hungry.

Purchased 6 bottles of the sauvignon blanc for the meagre sum of $60 (normally $20 per bottle). Not a bad drop at all very easy drinking on a sunny day (which I was fortunate enough to have on my visit). A really relaxing way to spend an afternoon.

On a tour of the Yarra Valley we settled at Killara Estate for a wine tasting and lunch. We were positioned on a shaded deck overlooking the vineyards. We had a generous tasting of the wines and became familiar with the differences between French and Italian varieties. Killara seemed to have quite a proud Italian heritage and food to prove why. We had an antipasto platter (wish I knew what the name of the cheese was, it's was suburb.) and 2 varieties of wood-fired pizza (Mushroom and white truffle oil and a spinach pumpkin and feta.) Which suited my being vegetarian perfectly. The meat-eaters among us were all treated to a rather delicious looking lasagna that according to the owner is a family recipe. The varieties of wine were all quite pleasant, however the Pinot Grigio was not a favourite of mine, though it is supposedly very popular, so it's probably just me. It was beautiful weather the day we went and it was a nice laid back setting to relax away the ...read more

Killara Estate is a charming restaurant venue and small producer.

As part of a large group, we were offered an informative wine tasting on the deck, overlooking the estate and hills beyond. Whilst the grape varieties themselves weren't to my palate, there was plenty there to please the others with some amazing deals on hand if you wish to purchase by the half dozen bottles.

This was followed by some very tasty antipasto, crisp thin crust woodfired pizza's ( the mushroom and white truffle oil was superb) and mamas homemade lasagne.
We rolled out of there at the end of the visit having eaten and drunk far too much, but having had a lovely and very releaxed time !

I really like Killara Estate because it has the feel of a family-run winery. This makes the tasting experience so much more enjoyable - becase you are talking directly to the people who run it. On the day I was there the weather was lovely and we had a generous tasting on a wooden deck overlooking the vines. Just perfect. For lunch we had equally generous antipasto platters, pizzas and nonna's recipe lasagne. And the wines were great too - especially the pinot grigio. Highly recommended!
