Kimchi Grandma Restaurant
Located in Carnegie, Kimchi Grandma Restaurant is busy, simple and unpretentious and will provide you with one of the best Korean home style meals in Melbourne. Kim Chi, the namesake dish, is a highlight – hot and spicy pickled cabbage that is served along with a fine range of complimentary condiments.
Classic Korean dishes such as gyozas, beef bulgogi and seafood hot pot are a big favourite with the regulars with specialty dishes being stews and clay hot-pots available in a tempting range of flavours and washed down nicely with a Korean beer or favoured choice from the wine list.

Whilst I enjoy dining at Kimchi Grandma (think sizzling beef bulgogi, kimchi soup, and the gorgeous side dishes!), the service here isn't as 'warm' or as intimate as that of '7&7', another (smaller) Korean restaurant up on Koorang Road that is much friendlier in my opinion. I may be biased as I frequented '7&7' before trying Kimchi Grandma, but I will stick to my convictions.
This is one of my fav places! Have been going there for years now and am yet to be disappointed! The food is always fresh and tasty and generally very quick to come out. Their Seafood Pancake and Octopus Bulgogi are divine! My husband and I eat there regularly and we're far from being considered "locals". For $30 we are stuffed and get the left overs packed up for the next day's lunch. To those who are looking for great service and attention; this is not the place. The staff are consistently pleasant, however English is not their strong point. In saying that, I've always received what I ordered; if all else fails, just point your finger to the item on the menu! Value for money.. this place packs a punch!!!
I'm a huge Korean food addict and I have to say that this restaurant is good!
I love their bulgogi, really flavorful and tasty. I'm also amazed by their ddukbokki. So far, the best ddukbokki i've ever tasted in Melbourne. It's rich and spicy (not that spicy though, since I have a strong immune to spicy things). It reminds me of my holiday in Korea. oh, the side dishes are also lovely! The reason why I gave 3 1/2 stars rather than 5 stars even though I lovee the food, is the poor service. The service is really slow and the waitress don't talk English that much so that's a bit a problem
After having many people recommend this restaurant and having tried it for take away we thought we would try a night out at Kim Chi. It was a disaster. We waited 20 mins to get seated (even thought we had made a booking). Once we finally ordered it took an hour before 1 dish arrived at the table. No wait staff could understand english or tell us which beef dish it was they had just left us with. We ended up walking out.
