La Petanque
Try to visit during the week when the lunch specials are much cheaper than on weekends. The views are spectacular and the restaurant is charming, filled with warm wood but nice tablecloths and impeccably clean and well-presented. It's not a cheap eat but great for a special occasion or day out. The food is superbly fresh and beautifully cooked. Staff is attentive without crowding you. There are some vegetarian selections on the menu and other dietary requirements can be graciously catered to.
Food Good, Service Absolutely Dreadful. We waited over 2.5 hours for a main meal and when following up the status we were told this is acceptable and we should have asked for a 'quick meal'. The wait staff was unprofessional and rude staff really shouldn't be in the service industry. We will not return and we live locally. It's an expensive restaurant so save your money and try others instead.
What a gem this place is. Usually restaurants out of town can be hit and miss but La Petanque at Red Hill was terrific. I thoroughly enjoyed the crispy pork belly and my friend was a huge fan of the duck. Dessert for me wasn't a strong point (strawberry minestrone) with the strawberries being too hard and lacking taste - however everyone else at the table loved their choice. It was great to have first class service from some native French waiters too. Overall a great choice and well above my expectations on the day.
The level of cooking is totally remarkable and unexpected from a restaurant hidden in the middle of the Mornington Peninsula. The Modern French cuisine and the compositions of flavors are spot on. It felt I was back in the middle of Provence in one of those Michelin stars restaurant you stumble by occasionally while trying to find your way around, a real find.
Great food - unbelievable value, midweek 4 courses tasting menu for $55 fantastic views and atmosphere amazing wine list attentive service.
