Labour In Vain
The Labour in Vain hotel has been a fixture on Brunswick Street, Fitzroy since it was established in 1853. Today it's more popular than ever.
Despite the name, having a right knees-up in this Fitzroy honkytonk isnt much of a struggle. Easygoing but never comatose, its ideal for hepped-up Friday night beers or lazy Sunday hair of the dogs. The rough-hewn tables and ye olde memorabilia on the walls whisper cosy rather than screaming kitsch, while huge windows looking out on the always-outr Brunswick St offer a people-watching paradise.
As some people have suggested, this is basically your typical corner bar. Not that that's a bad thing because this bar is a pretty decent corner bar, at least that was my impression the last time I came here. The first time it just seemed to be one of those boring bars with just one room, however this second time I came here I suddenly discovered that they had this cool rooftop deck. This ended up clinching the deal and it has gone from being just an ordinary bar to a pretty cool bar. They have a number of craft beers on tap, as well as the standards for those who don't like craft beers, however the thing that caught my eye was that it had a lot of old artifacts on the walls around the main room. It seems like one of those trendy inner-city bars that is trying to maintain the old style of the original neighbourhood, and in a way it works.
