Little Hutong has the feeling of a grand folly. Ostensibly named for a back alley in Beijing, it’s actually a sly nod to the gentrification of these traditional houses in the back streets into something befitting Chinese hipsters, attracting countless tourists in search of the ‘authentic Beijing’. What’s billed as a South East Asian hawker menu, is heavily influenced by the owner's globetrotting travels. There’s plenty to explore from the menu’s small bites section, starting with sashimi-grade Yellowfin tuna, dusted green with parsley and sesame seeds, then presented on crisp rice crackers with wasabi mayo. in a dish called Surfing Wasabi Tuna ($17.80). Salted duck egg yolk and pickles help to elevate Crispy Soft Shell Crab ($17.80) presented san choy bao-style on lettuce leaf cups. Hutong - loosely adapted refers to those backstreets in Beijing that are full of dining experiences to remember - how apt a name for this dining experience in Little Bay! This is a place to come for amazing food, aesthetic decor and a relaxed and fun experience. The restaurant constantly adapts and modifies their menu for new flavors and the freshest produce. Be warned though the cocktails are strong and easy to ...read more
It's quite a trek to this secluded restaurant, situated in a residential hub and limited public transport. The atmosphere is quiet pleasant and casual which is great for a group catchup. The food has Malaysian and Japanese street food influence. It was wonderful and flavoursome with quite generous portion sizes too. The highlight for me was the prawn laksa which was extremely fragrant and the perfect balance of sweet and spicy.
Little Hutong is pretty much a distinct oasis for the otherwise newly built but quiet medium density residential area. As the first of amongst the few to occupy the commercial spaces, this Malaysian and Japanese inspired Asian restaurant sets up a secluded atmosphere inside the restaurant, distancing themselves from the outdoor ambiance through the installation of floor to ceiling wooden walls right after the glass window and minimal waiting space filled wth nothing but their big name in lights. This creates a sense of VIP when entering the place. Inside, the dark yet modern-like atmosphere was quite inviting and allows this smallish sized restaurant to make a mark in terms of its premium. Sadly, all of this barrier interior might have interfere with mobile network reception, with almost no reception most of the time and no free WiFi available ...read more
