Los Amates Mexican Kitchen

It turns out that not all Mexican style restaurants are the same, namely because you have the restaurants, and you have places like this one which is actually more of a bar than happens to serve plates of food to share. Mind you, it took me a little while to work that out, and actually ended up visiting a number of similar places before it clicked. That doesn't necessarily mean that this is a bad place, namely because you can get food here, and the dishes tend to be much more communal, such as Nachos. However, it is primarily a bar, which also isn't necessarily a bad thing. However, the staff were pretty cool, and this place certainly had some charm about it.

It's trendy, hip and very busy. The food is good overall and it's a great spot to share and try some Mexican dishes with friends. The noise levels can be a bit over the top, so if you're looking for a quiet place to talk, this might not be it!

Here for some simple Mexican. I love my soft tacos and after coming back from the states i just wanted to get some more Mexican. Los Amates in Fitzroy serves a great range of Mexican dishes. I did my soft tacos and the condiments provided on the side was reasonable. The salsa was great. The meat on the tacos was average. My husband ordered their Mexican rice meat dish. Served like meatballs, i believe the rice portion was fairly tiny for the amount of meat provided. But my husband said the sauce on the meat was pretty nice. Overall average dining experience.

As its name suggests, this places serves Mexican food. This place can get crowded and bust and weekends so I strongly recommend that you book in advance to avoid disapppointment. I ordered the Taco de Pescado and it contaioned large pieces of battered fish. It was a bit blant but nothing a sprinkle of salt can't fix. The staff and friendly and their prices are reasonable.
