Marvel Stadium
2. While it isn't my favourite stadium (at least compared to the ones that I have been to) Etihad isn't actually all the bad. Maybe it's because of the fact that as far as I am aware it is the only covered sports stadium in Australia. Also, unlike the others, it was purpose built, so you don't have a bunch of higgledy piggledy stands scattered around the oval. Like many of the other stadiums there are plenty of places to grab a feed or a drink (though during the quiet games a number of them will be closed). I have also found that it tends to be cheaper when you go and watch the less popular games as opposed to the popular ones (which is actually a good thing that I follow an interstate team). I generally end up coming here at least once a year, namely to watch the Port v Carlton match (if they happen to be playing here). It's pretty close to Southern Cross Station, which is also really convenient. While nowhere near as good as the MCG, it still serves it's purpose.
Yes, it's true that seats high up can get some obstruction from the roof but on a clear day in good weather with your team roaring away, Etihad is a great place to watch the football! With everything you need nearby, transport and cafes, Melbourne doesn't get much better than this!
This is a great venue. I've been to several AFL sports matches here and a few music concerts too. In both cases the seating is good - you will get a great view, no matter where your seat is. For sports, if you're in General Admission it's easy, but make sure you're not sitting too high up on Level 3, or your view of the big screens will be obscured by the roof structures. The ground is easy to get to - by trams along Collins and Bourke Streets, or by train to Southern Cross Station - then a few hundred meters walk into the ground. There's lots of places to get food and drinks both at the stadium and as you approach. Overall, the venue is a winner.
Etihad Stadium has had a few name changes since its inception along with some teething problems and complaints about the playing surface hardness causing increased injuries. Nevertheless it is a great venue for concerts or live sports and with the retractable roof it is also versatile in all sorts of weather. Better still, you have public transport right to the door!
