A beautiful bookshop - cosy, choc-full of the best titles and with fantastically knowledgeable staff (partiulcarly when it comes to children's and young adult!). This shop is also in a great visitor location for enjoying Melbourne views, great restaurants and cafes. Highly, highly recommend this as a must-visit bookshop
For a bookshop where half of the stock is aimed at children, my experience there today was nothing short of abysmal. The staff have no customer service when it comes to dealing with families. As my two children were repeatedly told off for touching books and toys (which they have displayed within easy reach of kids), one would have thought we were at an art gallery or a fine china store. The owner was rude and made no attempt to hide her disdain for children. Not a pleasant experience at all.
I too was in the bookshop at the same time as the young girl and boy acted as TORNADOES in the shop. They ran around the very small store, removing books from the shelf as the mother totally ignored their behaviour. When the staff member very politely asked the children to be careful when they were looking at the books and put them back on the shelf rather than leave them on the floor, the girl told the staff member one of the books was "broken". Prior to the children playing around with the book - it was in a new saleable condition. I was disgusted with the behaviour of the mother - she was offended that the staff member had spoken to her children and she did not offer to pay for the book which had been ruined by her children. I work in a classroom and children are encouraged to treasure books and take care when reading or looking at books not leave them on the floor for others to pick up.
