McHenry Hohnen Winery & Cellar Door
A top five star award winning boutique winery in the heart of Margaret River, specialising in natural fruit-driven wines and biodynamic growing practices. The McHenry Hohnen label unites two long-standing prominent Margaret River winemaking and growing families, the McHenrys and Hohnens, who have been in the area since the 1970s. David Hohnen was the founding winemaker at Cape Mentelle and Cloudy Bay in NZ, and Murray McHenry and his sister Sandy owned vineyards across the region from Burnside to Forest Grove and south to Karridale. The families joined forces in 2004 to produce fine wines that are truly representative of their regional and varietal origins.
The McHenry Hohnen winemaking philosophy is an essentially simple and traditional one: careful nurturing and minimal intervention to retain the natural character of the wine. The result is astounding. Fresh, fruit-driven natural wines that are elegant, bold and complex in structure. Winemaking is handled by Chief Winemaker Trent Carroll, with mentoring and support and from David Hohnen.
The vineyards are farmed using the principles of biodynamic agriculture. All viticultural practices nurture the biodiversity within the soil that surround the vines. This organic approach produces fruit that displays clean, intense characteristics which exemplify the nuances of each individual site. Whilst not yet officially classified as "biodynamic", McHenry Hohnen's winemaking processes and vineyard practices are just that. Viticulturist Mike Sleegers has a "100% chemical-free" policy across all the vineyards, where soils are enhanced by use of homemade tea blend sprays and natural composting.
The McHenry Hohnen Cellar Door is open for visitors 7 days a week from 10:30am to 4:30pm at 5962 Caves Road, only 1km north of the Wallcliffe Road turnoff and just 6.5kms from the centre of Margaret River. They regularly run specials and Museum releases so it is definitely worth stopping in for a look and a free tasting, or check out their newly-launched website where you can purchase online and view their range of wines in detail at www.mchv.com.au. ...read more
