Surrounded by rolling green hills, and housed in an old cheese factory, Milk Haus is the epitome of what I'd like a regional cafe to be. We arrive for breakfast and decide to forgo the long communal tables in the atmospheric schoolhouse-style interior for a chance to get amongst the buzzing bees and flowers on one of their arbour tables. Snapping fresh watercress and matchsticks of apple shine on the Beetroot Pancakes ($17), a breakfast dish that’ll kick-start your digestion with fresh horseradish. Throw in some sweet potato hummus and toasted seeds, and you have a very healthy start to the day, though the texture on the beetroot pancakes could be improved. I have no such complaints about the Scrambled Eggs ($10.00) on toasted, buttered Kraken sourdough with a Medjool Dates, Toasted Walnuts and Cheddar ($8.00) add-on. Mixed through your eggs this is a genius combination of salty, sweet and nutty that’ll fuel your body for the better part of the day.
