Mitre Tavern Steakhouse

I sort of knew about this place, and have been meaning to visit it for quite some time, but never actually got around to it until recently. It is basically an old 19th Century pub, but it is hidden down one of Melbourne’s alleys, so it happens to be one of those places that can be fairly easily missed. Well, it turned out to be rather charming, and not only that but it also has some nice beers on tap as well.

Great architecture but regarding the Steak House upstairs - service was slow, not all of our steaks were cooked to liking. Drinks service also slow. Not really a fantastic experience given the $$$

We’ve been going here on Tuesdays for trivia night which is free and heaps of fun. Although we never win, the quiz master is really entertaining and there’s a good vibe going on. It’s great if you’re after dinner as well as the quiz is played in the dining area so you can order food, drinks or finger food. Food is just your standard pub food but really great atmosphere.

Traditional with a lot of history! The servings are huge! Staff are amazing and the venue speaks to the heritage of Melbourne, being our city's oldest pub. A regular after work hangout for the many suited city workers, this place is often busy with the traditional warmth and welcome of an English pub spilling out into the laneway where there is plenty of standing table room, plus some seated area as well. Highly recommend. Great for an after work bevvy or a gigantic pub meal. They do a VERY competitive trivia here as well.

I attended a business lunch function held here because it's renowned as a "great place for a steak". The building and decor is old pub style with heavy carpets, big bars and solid timber furniture. At my function, drinks service was okay but the meal was very very slow in coming. As a venue I'd only rate it as okay. Having said that, there's always crowds outside here - so I guess it's generally good.
