Murmur Bar
Murmur Bar is secreted away from the main streets of Melbourne in Warburton Lane. Occupying a heritage listed building, this venue used to host a coffee import warehouse over a hundred years ago. Evidence of this previous incarnation exists with the original crane and trapdoor still in place. As a bar, this cosy establishment serves a range of local and imported beers on tap along with wines and cocktails.
Find the dark laneway strewn with bins, look for the little lit-up sign on your left and climb the stairs to this little haven away from the corporate rat race. This place really is a little gem hidden away from the mainstream bars around. They have a great selection of unique and interesting cocktails, not just your standard mix but concoctions of their own making. I'm not really a cocktail person but after trying the burnt orange cocktail I was blown away by how excellent it was and for good reason, they have won awards for their excellent cocktails.
The atmosphere and location is warm and relaxed if not a little small. The obscurity of its location however usually means there's plenty of space to move around until later in the night. Definitely worth a visit if you're keen for great cocktails and a nice chilled place to relax!
This is the only venue in the alley which provides amply real-estate for trendy smokers to loiter and lend their grungy angst to the scene. The bar is a small affair with comfy couches and great dcor which is perfect for the good-looking crowd to drape themselves over. With a beer in hand - I tried draping myself over the armrests of two adjoining couches in the vain attempt to appear nonchalant and one of the in crowd. My success is debatable but I definitely managed to wedge myself to the point of requiring assistance to stand. The selection of beers was a little small but the cocktails were a big hit and the staff were very friendly. The only real minus was the music the selection was good but the volume was ridiculous for such a small venue, it made conversation difficult and felt like they were trying to be a nightclub in a room no bigger than my lounge room. All up it's a great little place to take friends or a perfect venue to meet cute strangers.
