This is one of the Adelaide institutions, along with the Blue and White Cafe. Unfortunately the Blue and White was closed (which was a shame because that was where all my friends would go they seemed to prefer it to the Burger Bar). Anyway, this is your classic Fish and Chip takeaway shop they have video games, only take cash, and have a pretty decent selection of takeaway snacks. I, as usual, went for the Yiros, since I really couldn't go for the AB. Now, it is the AB that sets this places apart it's basically a plate of chips covered in meat, gravy, and sauce. However it doesn't technically have a price because they can come as big as you want them. In fact it is not uncommon for a large group to pay hundreds of dollars for an AB (and they have a photo gallery on the wall of people who have eaten huge amounts). In fact, the AB is literally an Adelaidian tradition you have not experienced the real Adelaide until you have had an AB.
I don't think a visit to North Adelaide is really complete without at least trying to fill your tummy with something incredibly greasy but so delicious from here. They've been clogging arteries in the most yummy way for many many years, and just thinking about one of their AB's is probably enough to have a heart attack while salivating and driving to get one all at the same time. The decor here is incredible too, very retro in a cool way. Having said that, I actually prefer the blue & white down the road because they're better value.
Tried my first AB here last weekend. It was amazing - a big mess of chips, lamb and sauce. So filling (I couldn't eat it all, and I got a mini one!), really tasty, and you could tell that the chips and lamb were great on their own. It was very salt, but I guess that's the point! Good value and the staff were friendly and casual.
Try the AB it's short for Atomic Bomb, AfterBirth or ABortion because it's a huge mess of chips, yiros style meat and saucy goodness. A serving usually costs about $10 but you can buy much larger servings. Round up your friends and see if you can do the AB challenge, the current record is approximately $1,100 worth. Tastes great especially after a big night out! It's one of those things that you have to put on your to do list if you're visiting Adelaide. Once you're tried it you'll want to come back again for more :-)
