North Fitzory Arms Hotel/Haskins Restaurant
296 Rae St
Fitzroy North, VIC, 3068
This is one of those nice quiet pubs hidden away in the backstreets of inner Melbourne, and it is also one of those places that if it wasn't for the internet I probably would have had no idea that it even existed. If there is one thing that defines this place and that it is dedicated to the old Fitzroy Lions (which is now the Brisbane Lions). In fact you cannot walk too feet without seeing something that is dedicated to that particular football team. In fact all of the tables have the Lions symbol painted on them. Okay, I may not be a huge fan of the Lions, but the theme does make the pub stand out quite a lot. As for the pub, it is a lovely little pub with a small restaurant in it, and a nice quiet beer garden. Lovely place for a quiet drink, or a meal.
Located on the corner of Rae Street and Reid Street, just a short walk from a tram stop, this establishment seamlessly blends the vibe of a traditional cosy pub with a classier and more dining-based atmosphere. The interior is warm and pleasant, and the beer garden is spacious and charming, with fairy lights among the vines on the wall. Drinks are reasonably priced and the menu is impressive. I commend the North Fitzroy Arms as a venue that supports poetry, since Black Pepper have held several poetry book launches here recently. Unfortunately the sound system seemed to cause some difficulties at one of these, and they did not allow any electric guitar at the other. All in all I would definitely return if I'm in the neighbourhood or if something poetry-related is on here, and I recommend the North Fitzroy Arms as a pleasant place to eat and drink.
