On The Bay Cafe

As one of the only eateries on its block, On The Bay is a popular place for breakfast or lunch. The Malabar café overlooks the beach and grassy landscape and the range of takeaway and eat-in meals are generous and filling. Hamburgers, banana bread, fish and chips, salads and other refreshing mains can be ordered along with a cool drink or coffee. A kids corner with toys will keep young ones entertained. The café is open Tuesday to Sunday.

I ate here this morning with three friends after a round of golf. I decided to go for some Turkish bread with avocado and tomato. This wasn't on the menu but as it is a straight forward meal I thought it would be easy to pull together. When my meal arrived I was served two halves of a tomato that were grilled, three small slices of avocado and four slices of Turkish bread. The staff who served us was friendly and the service was fairly prompt for a small cafe. When we asked for the bill I was stunned to see that they charged me $3.50 for the tomatoes, $3.50 for the avocado and $6.50 for the bread! That's $13.50 for meagre serving of tomato & avocado on turkish bread. Oh yeah $3.50 for a little pot of tea also. I asked the staff who served us could they come back with a more reasonable price for the meal so they went off and asked the management at the time. The management came out to us and told us that they couldn't change the price as this is what other ...read more

This cafe has changed hands a number of times since being at Malabar, I believe it has a lot to do with it's location being down near the beach and sometimes a bit isolated. However they do offer great food and a nice simple setting. Sometimes they can get overly busy on a Sunday morning but I find this can happen at a lot of cafes around the beach.
