Cool, finally a cinema that shows arty movies that doesn’t involve me having to either travel over to the other side of Melbourne, or catch multiple different methods of public transport. Okay, it doesn’t really have the same selection that the bigger cinemas have, but having one of the same railway line that I live on is a huge bonus.Emerald The Westgarth is basically a Palace Cinema which means that it shows a mix of mainstream and not so mainstream films. The cinemas themselves are huge, but that doesn’t really seem to be a problem. Also, it is in one of the old fifties cinemas which is also pretty cool. Oh, and you can take beer into the movie as well, as long as it is purchased from the counter that is.
There is something really romantic about westgarth cinemas. The preserved Art Deco interiors and the grand stairwell on entrance, the place has real heart. However be warned, the cinemas can get a little busy, and for popular screenings lines of people can spill out onto the street. My tip is to buy in advance or arrive early .
The Westgarth is a Northcote icon and is full of art deco charm and character and has had a major refurbishment. If, like me, you are still pining for the now defunct Valhalla with it's ambience and it's hilarious calendars, the Westgarth is sure to soothe serious movie-goers.They serve Lavazza coffee and decent snacks. I don't think they run the all-nighters they used to but they have a great range of films showing in the one place.
