Sydney is a big place, and I am only referring to the CBD here, which means that where you end up staying there is a part of the city that you won't get to see (and I do enjoy simply wandering around the neighbourhood). This was one of the first hotels I stayed in on my recent trips to Sydney, and while it was okay, it was not fantastic. The rooms were small (but that's not necessarily a problem if you are staying by yourself, and anyway you generally don't stay in your hotel room on a trip, though I end up doing so to do my writing in the morning). It was also advertised as the highest residential tower in the southern hemisphere though that claim to fame is way out of date. Oh, there are no breakfast facilities, but at least there is a garden on the room.
As a regular guest at the Park Regis, I can say that this is THE Hotel in Sydney if you want a great stay in the CBD at a modest price. You are warmly welcomed by the front desk staff and the recently refurbished rooms are very comfortable.
The views from the roof at level 45 are breathtaking and the pool on the roof must be the highest in Australia.
A great hotel within walking distance of the main shopping precinct, China town and over the road is the monorail to Darling Harbour
