This is essentially a gambling den. There is a smattering of average eateries throughout, the crowning glory of which is the Chinese upstairs, famous for it's killer Yum Cha. (Plenty of delicious steamed options for the health-conscious, but a limited range of vegan. The firehouse does a reasonable pizza and wine and has a pleasant vibe, but the rest serve pretty terrible food and staff and management don't want to know if you complain. There was once a lap pool on the top floor but it cracked and the legendary women's showers and sauna there were only held together by cocroaches, mould, and the herb poultices used therein by the local ladies. True.
Trophy's bistro in Parramatta Lagues club is a nice place, although many of their meals are deep fried or fried. I avoid this by ordering either of the salads (prawn or beef) which are very tasty and have lots of interesting ingredients. They used to serve the soup of the day in a cob loaf which I wish they still had on the menu. Firehouse restaurant on the top floor does a nice chilli prawn pizza but the environment can be a bit quiet up there sometimes.
I was a member here a few years ago and then just didn't use it enough to keep renewing. I joined again this year and have been a few times since. It's a good place to unwind and have a few drinks with friends - also to watch the footy in a good atmosphere. The food in the bistro is better than what I remembered. They have a $5 roast all this month (april 2010) which is great value.
