Parramatta Park
Parramatta Park
Parramatta Park is a must see for visitors to Sydney. If you are interested in Australian history then you will already know about this National Heritage Listed Park. Colonists convict and free, were first successful in growing sufficient food to feed themselves here. The Parklands were too attractive to be reserved for subsistence cropping for long and were used by successive Governors as a respite from the stresses of running a very large open air prison. Following a determined public campaign, the area was gazetted a People's Park in 1858.
Ever since then the parklands have been Parramatta's backyard, a place where the community meets for family picnics, sports, cycling with the kids and walking the dog.
There are two fun playgrounds and kids can ride safely on the sealed off-road area. The Park's circuit road is used for road training by cyclists including a dedicated Triathlon club and runners. Tucked in beside the Macquarie Street entrance is a large formal rose garden which contains a rare collection of heritage and species roses.
History enthusiasts will want to take the Curator's tour of the convict built, eighteenth century Dairy building. Also on offer is a FREE tour of the Park hosted by the Park's knowledgeable Director, and for those interested in natural history are Ranger led tours discovering wildlife. Check out the Park's web site for booking information and other events and festivals.
Parramatta Park Cafe, located down by the river is child and dog friendly, serves excellent food and coffee and is open 8am to 3pm daily.

This place is huge. In fact it is so huge that I only got a glimpse of what it had to offer. The thing that immediately caught my attention was the old tudor gate that lead inside, and I ended up spending a heap of time just admiring it. However it isn't just a park as it has the old governor's mansion here which is listed on the World Heritage List (due to it's connection with Australia's convict history). There is also some tea rooms in the old gate house. The Parramatta River also runs through the park (though it is a little grotty around here). It is a great place to spend an afternoon, whether just exploring what it has to offer, having a picnic, or simply just looking at the main gate. Oh, there are also a number of ovals here as well if you feel inclined to belt a ball around for a bit.
I love this park and I'm here almost every weekend for a nice walk or for picnics with friends and family.
This place is huge.. You have walking tracks starting from 0.6km to almost 5km.
The scenery in the park is so beautiful. Love seeing all the animals like all the different ducks, especially the 3 white ducks that are always together and the section with all the Bats.
They also hold great events here like Sydney Symphony in Parramatta Park and Winterfest.
The parking is great here as well.
