9) Solder resist application
In this step area that is not soldered may be covered with solder resist(solder mask).One of the most common resists used today is called as LPI(liquid photoimageable solder mask).A photo-sensitive coating is applied to the surface of the PWB.And then exposed to light through the solder mask image film,and at the end developed where the unexposed areas are washed away.
10)Legend printing
A legend is printed on one or both sides of the PCB.It contains the component designators,switch settings,test points and the other indications helpful in assembling,testing and servicing the circuit board.
There are three methods to print the legend
First is Silk screen printing epoxy ink was the established method.
Second is Liquid photo imaging is a more accurate method than screen printing.
Third is Ink jet printing is new but increasingly used.
11)Bare-board test
In this step Unpopulated boards are usually bare-board tested for shorts and opens.A short is a connection between two points that should not be connected.And an open is a missing connection between points that should be connected.
12)Assembly
In assembly bare board is populated with electronic components to form a functional printed circuit assembly(PCA).
13)Protection and packaging
PCB's intended for extreme environments often have a conformal coating.Which is applied by dipping or spraying after the components have been soldered.
