Went there yesterday for our anniversary. Our fourth visit and it has been very good every time. Yes Ron can be a bit odd but I've never seen him be impolite or rude. And food is always good. I'm always fascinated by the negative reviews as I've just never experienced it at all.
We were new in town just on a long weekend holiday & Greenwell Point is a nice quiet neighbourhood. However, we saw the pelican rocks restaurant & thought lets go there for dinner. When we got there was no one to greet us at the entrance or as we got upstairs. Then one of the staff yelled from across the bar at us if we had a reservation in front of all of his customers currently eating "do you have a reservation" we said no as we obviously didn't know we needed one half the restaurant was empty. Then yells again "well I don't have any table for you". So we left, even though we didn't get to eat & experience the food & drinks there, we already had horrible customer service as we walked into the restaurant.
As a first timer to the Pelican Rocks, I read the reviews carefully. The restaurant has been around for thirty years and it is not what one would call a modern menu, but the quality of the seafood and the service were first rate. I cannot understand how anyone could complain about the portion size. As a group of 4, we tried 9 dishes and had nothing but praise for all of them. Definitely worth a try. We will be going back.
On the plus side, the restaurant has great views over the beautiful Crookhaven River. It's just a shame that the food was so awful. Menu selections didn't seem to embrace the wealth of seafood that this region has to offer. The fish was very tired and the presentation was like something from the 1970's, including that 70's icon, the potato in aluminium foil! The food is way overpriced for what you get, basically it is Club food at Restaurant prices. Service was mostly friendly, but simple questions like "what is the fish of the day?" or "can we have our bill please?" had to be referred back to the staff'. We couldn't wait to get out of the place. Overall, this was absolutely the worst restaurant my wife and I have been to in twenty years.
