PHD is one of many Vietnamese restaurants in Marrickville that are getting frequented by a lot of customers. The restaurant has a limited space with just enough room for tables and chairs and passageways, but not enough to make you feel comfortable. The red-laden ambiance which I suppose would give the restaurant its Asian atmosphere makes the shop feel even smaller.
I was brought to this restaurant by my friend. A lot of people there ordered their pho (noodle soup), but we decided to venture out a bit and had their tomato rice with two dishes from the menu. When I visit Marrickville, this place is top of mind. And when I sit down at the table, the only thing I will order is the Ph Beef Special. You can't go wrong with Ph from PHD (Pho Bac Hai Duong). This place is crowded every weeknight while the other nearby restaurants are empty (not to say that the other restaurants are bad, but that this place is at the top of their game).
Tried their 'Medium Rare Pho Dai' small today and apart from it being as pricey as 'Pho An' from Bankstown, everything else went down hill from there. The soup was not hot, the meat was dry, old (edges were dark) and well overcooked, the soup was overpowered with fish sauce, couldn't taste much else of that pho herb flavour. A huge let down. I probably went on a bad day but even so, to charge $9 - $13 a bowl I would expect the same consistency as 'Pho An'.
