Picnic are really known for their coffees. We came here as recommended by a friend and had their ice coffee and it was delicious! It was creamy and nice and strong. The place is very busy and popular so be sure to come early. I found the service to be quite friendly and would recommend it for anyone in the area
Once again my friend at the book club has managed to pick one of those rather different, but quite interesting, restaurants to meet at for our monthly book club meeting. The first thing that I noticed when I sat down was that everybody was reading these Little Golden Books, which I thought was quite quaint, until they pointed out that they actually contain the menu once again we have one of those places taking the menu to new and different heights. I have to say that this was a pretty cool cafe, the coffee was nice, and the staff really friendly. I had the open top steak sandwich with chips, though I have had much better chips in my day, but still a pretty cool place to spend a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon. I'm still not sure about the menus, though they probably work much better than a Doctor Seuss book.
Everyone knows that the top end of Toorak Rd is a "bit of a disappointment" these days. The number of empty shops is only bested by the number of maternity wear specialists and there are surprisingly few good cafe options. Picnic looks like it might be the ace in the pack with it's polished concrete, high ceiling, ridiculously good looking waiters and comfy-looking chair options - but it is not.
Recently taken over by 4 young guys there is hope that the overpriced meals will be reviewed - $16+ for a chicken schnitzel sandwich and chips that took an eternity to arrive was a bit much. Thankfully the habit of the whole cafe being smoked out by the kitchen during breakfast sittings seems to have been fixed and the coffee remains good. Unfortunately though the meals are nowhere near as delicious as those that serve them.
